Inside/Outsider

Sculpture @ Arizona Western College

January-February 2018

These sculptures are made not just from found objects, but from materials that have been discarded or otherwise declared to be of no use. The unwanted. Art of no value, as a friend of mine with similar tendencies likes to say.

I want to reveal the surface and texture of those objects, as a record of their lives in use and disuse. I try to find a grace or elegance in what’s damaged, battered, filthy, scratched and dented. Underlying all of this is my deep concern for our environment, especially the overconsumption and waste our culture encourages.

My pieces come together organically, building up over time rather than proceeding from a set plan, while always keeping in mind the basic the elements of design. Many of them end up taking some kind of figurative form. Some of the ones in this show are like masks or icons; a few are more abstract. Some are pieces I made quite a few years ago, while others are fresh out of my studio.

I hope you’ll see both the humor and seriousness, and any beauty that might exist in them.
